Aloha e komo mai!
Halau O Na Hali‘a is a hula halau (school) based in Waldorf, Maryland,
established in October 2003 by Patty Makanui, Debbie Burkle and Keoni Paul.
What began as an informal gathering of individuals who wanted to continue to
learn and to share the hula and the Hawaiian culture has evolved into a group
of individuals grounded in the traditions of a hula halau.
Our mission is to perpetuate the hula. The instructors strive to continue
learning the dances and traditions of Hawai‘i while sharing their knowledge
with others. We focus on kahiko (traditional) and ‘auana (contemporary) hula
styles, as well as ‘oli (chant). The halau offers a wide range of classes to
accommodate its members.
Being accepted as a member of Halau O Na Hali‘a requires a commitment to
learning the hula and participating in the traditions of a hula halau.
We do not expect prior experience with the hula and will help you become
familiar with the protocol.
We are dedicated to creating an environment for those who are sincerely
committed to learning the hula and the Hawaiian culture.
Mahalo for your interest!
